Shohei kondo’s Zennish

article/ Yang gan

Shohei Kondo is an outstanding contemporary youth artist. He was born in Japan, and has ever received art education in both Japan and the United States. The artist possesses such cultural accumulations that are so typical of the East Asian area, as well as such broad international art vision. He is able to combine the ancient Japanese civilization and modern western civilization. And his works are filled with religious and mythological salvation as well as the reflection of human nature and desires.

In a set of graphical photography works, Shohei Kondo pays attention to the gradual change in color from blue to purple, and applies it into the process of doing patchwork to create the background. The simple and colliding art method helps present the artist’s thinking on objects as well as color itself. In western modern art, such artists as Pollock often tend to use very brilliant and shiny colors in their painting so as to express the ardent emotions from the inside of the artists. However, in this set of photographs by Kondo, the color he used is extremely peaceful, comfortable and natural. In fact, the artist has been under the influence of the Japanese Zen for a long time. In the Buddhist culture, there is such a famous saying as “color is just emptiness”. In the works of the artist, we can easily and obviously feel the emptiness behind the visible objects, which is actually about a vivid presentation of the aesthetics of the Zen.

Women and sex is another major theme of Shohei Kondo’s creation work. In a set of art works of

female bodies, the artist did not try to make some true copies of women’s bodies, nor did he try to present the physical structure of female bodies. Well, instead, he used some inspirational, moving and profound methods to express the lightness, swiftness and holiness of the female body. The entire set of works are filled with the ambiguity and metaphors of sex. The father of art history Aby Warburg ever paid attention to the flowing postures of the goddesses in some pictures, such as the Spring by Botticelli. Well, the female bodies created by Shohei also show more attention to the expression of the mobility as well as beautiful elegance of the females, as if they are some images and memory of one moment, which then came back to nothing as the desires faded away.

Shohei Kondo started to do some Zen meditation very often since he was very young. In his creation, the artist is able to take use of the advantages of the pop art and the Statsu and kren School and then to combine them with the Zen, religion and Taoism and some other thoughts in a natural and perfect way. His works have won many awards, and he has held multiple exhibitions in the United States, Japan and China, which have attracted wide attention from people and have received professional praises for his excellent art too.
